Ever since i can remember, i wanted to be an egyptologist. However, more and more schools do not offer egyptology; coupled with the roubles in the middle east, i think it would be a while before i can even work there in safety. what careers are similair to egyptology? i do not want a job where i have to work in a cubicle until retirement..

You need a degree in archaeology or anthropology. Then you could always go on to do a post-grad course in Egyptology (things may have calmed down a bit by then).

Edit: I completely agree with Kyle, I have visited Egypt and the people were among the friendliest I have ever met. Very hospitable, lovely people :o)

I agree with the above answer. Get a degree in anthropology with a heavy concentration in archaeology. You can be an archaeologist and study other ancient cultures or a cultural anthropologist and study other cultures today. But if you are really interested in the ancient Egyptians then there aren't many other careers that will let you do the same type of work. An art historian specializing in ancient Egyptian art would be a distant second career path.

Don't let the mess in the Middle East right now discourage you from the future, though. Things change fast over there. You can have a bloody riot/revolution in one spot one year, and have a bustling internet cafe full of American tourists, businessmen, and women in the exact same spot the next year.

On a side note, contrary to what Fox news might tell you, most Arabs are very friendly and hospitable. I've found that they get very interested in any type of anthropological, historical, or archaeological research on them...so much so that they want to help and will talk your ear off about your thoughts and findings.

You would need to get your degree in Anthropology, and take all the egyptian courses your college offers as well as do your own research on it. You could even intern at natural history museum and work with Egyptian artifacts and mummies there.

No job is really similar to egyptology since it deals with a very specific culture. If you're interested in any other culture, then you could try studying that.
