Remember that it was a story told by Plato, that was also based on stories passed down through thousands of years in an age of difficult communication. Atlantis, if found, is probably not going to have "Atlantis" carved in stone at the front gates. But, the world changes over many thousand of years and we're finding that humans have been civilized longer than we ever thought before. The only thing that gets in the way of this is religion putting up a fight because the time frame doesn't match the bible.

Atlantis may be just a series of ancient stories that have a lot of truth to them being told over and over and new parts being added all the time. But there are still many more civilizations to be found in areas of the Earth that have moved and changed. Ice ages would have destroyed most of the evidence anywhere, but left some scattered remnants.

The existance of Atlantis is still in question. There have been thoughts that some very famous underwater ruins off the coast of New Zealand are the remains of Atlantis, but scientists so far are not sure.
